If you’re looking for a unique visiting experience or a different kind of gift option, olive oil tasting is definitely something to keep in mind next time you’re in town. The concept of olive oil tasting in the style of, say, wine or beer tasting is something that I would never have even considered. But now that I’ve been to a few such places around Boston, it makes so much sense.
Olive oil has a unique and classic taste, and it does really way infused with as many flavors you can imagine. Combined with equally versatile balsamic vinegar, you have yourself a really awesome tasting experience with an equally awesome and welcoming staff.
Salt & Olive is one of a tiny handful of these unique storefronts, comfortably nestled a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Harvard Square. When you enter their shop, you’re met with the delicious aroma of their spice assortment. To the left is an impressive display of about 40 different flavors of olive oil and vinegars on tap – you can mix and match with small pieces of bread to taste. Most of the flavors are available to purchase in multiple sizes or artfully curated gift sets.
What’s extra wonderful about Salt & Olive, though, is their impressive assortment of salts, spices, and teas. You can get pre-blended malasas, test your mettle with their pepper selection (labeled with their SHU ratings..yikes!), tequila shot cups made out of salt rock, glazes and sauces, and more. For its relatively tiny store, Salt & Olive makes wonderful and efficient use of their space by offering a gorgeous assortment of options that is any food-lovers dream.
And last, but certainly not least, the staff has always been extremely kind, knowledgeable, and cheerful. Ask them anything about their wares and you’ll get a good backstory. If you’re a food-lover visiting Boston, bringing the parents around, or just a local looking for something a little different to do on a nice afternoon, pay these fine folks a visit.
Salt & Olive is celebrating their first year anniversary this month – no small feat in an industry (and area) that’s tough to gain ground on. Great opportunity for first-timers and vets alike to get a really great feel for what they’re all about.
